9 San Bruno. Outbound. 5:37AM 5.18.11

Posted in 9 San Bruno on May 24, 2011 by 4x24

Had the 9 San Bruno and it was an early shift. Real early. 4:35am early. But the schedule was a good one since I had done it last week and me, the idiot that I am, just assumed that it would be smooth as it was then.

WRONG….WRONG. (Charlie Murphy voice)

So I was heading back outbound and I got to 2nd and Market and seen this old man with a suitcase and a bag making motions to let me know he wanted to get on the bus. Ok. In my mind I’m already thinking maybe this guy wants to go to the hospital (based on his behaviors and how I’m reading him) so I open the door and load up him and this other guy. He gets on and b-lines to the seat behind me and doesnt say anything. The other guy behind him asks me the time and shows me a transfer and walks and I yell “hey dude u got something?” Guy who jumped on second thought I was talking to him so I told that I was talking about the other guy.

That’s when he responded “I got a ticket.”
Me-“if you got a ticket it, show it then”
Him-“I got a ticket”
Me-” if you got it them come up and show or pay or get off the bus”
Then he didn’t say anything after any of my statements i said:
“alright dude you wasting everyones time. You gonna have to get off”
“we ain’t going anywhere until you pay or get off so it’s to your best interest to pick one.”
“alright. If you ain’t gonna get off voluntary, I’m gonna have to make the call and you gonna get off involuntarily.”
I look over and I see a police truck pull up next to me and I wave at him( since I have been sitting at the stop with him behind me for like 3 minutes) and he waves and turns left. Hahaha wow talk about some shitty luck.
So now like 5 minutes have passed and I call central. So central calls me back:
Me-“good morning central. This is run 2 on the 9. I got a fare evader on my bus who doesn’t want to pay or get off after I asked him. Can you send me a TS?”
Cc-“can I get your location and ID?”
Me-“2nd and Market.” I tell him my id.
Cc-“can you give us a description of the person?”
Me-“he’s an African American man wearing a blue hat ”
Cc-“anything more to help us?”
Me-“he’s got 2 bags with him”
Cc-“ok. We will send the police to you at 2nd and market”

So the dude starts saying something and at this point I’m not gonna talk to dude. I got nothing else to say. One of the other passengers comes up( a Latin lady) and asks in Spanish what’s Goin on and I tell her the situation and that we ain’t gonna be leaving till either he gets off or police comes takes him off. She decides to get off. At the same time i got a big white dude crossing the street and looking at the bus like he wants to get on. As he is about to step on i tell him that i aint gonna be going anywhere because I got someone that don’t wanna pay. He goes “he’s gonna need an escort” and I tell him “their on their way!” and dude smiles. He then says something along the lines of how some people don’t wanna pay and they mess up the rest of the day for others. Probably another 3 minutes go by and the fare evader starts saying some other rants and gets up and starts walking to the door and starts getting off. He talking a gang of shit like ‘ I’ma whip your ass if you get off the bus’,’you muthafuckin punk ass bus driver,’ ‘bitch ass,’ ‘I should come back up there and spit in your face bitch,’ and other shit. So when he starts saying that I respond with “oh yeah, your still getting off the bus though so just keep walking” and once he steps off the bus I 1) call central control back 2) Start loading everyone on the bus ( probably like 5 people outside) and 3) Police show up.

Also, as the dude is walking off the bus the white guy is talkin shit to dude telling him how he wasting his time and then he gets on the bus. Central calls me back and I tell them the guy jumped off the bus and if I can continue in route( I can make up all my time at the end of the line with the recovery time given) and keep going and they say yes.

So the police officer that passed me up jumps on the bus and realizes I was flagging him down the first time and he apologizes and I was like it’s cool and told him that the dude that was over there  and that he didn’t wanna pay or get off. He tells me his badge number(just in case I need to file paperwork) and he steps off the bus to talk to the guy who is Trying argue with the officer while another police car pulls up. I take off and I leave them to argue while I try to make up my time on the run.

I drop off the old white guy like 3 blocks later and as he gets off he says “I hope the rest of your day goes better and you don’t gotta have anyone else escorted off” and he laughs.

Outbound 9. 8:40PM. 4.26.11

Posted in 9 San Bruno on April 27, 2011 by 4x24

I’m telling you that shit usually happens on the last trip..

I take off from 2nd and Market at about 8:35pm and I’m making good time. I get to 5th and Market and I get my first bunch of morons: these 2 Ol drunkish-grampa-aged white dudes. So I do get alot of people at this stop but when you make good time, it evens out. So the 1st old dude has a token and he shows it to me and I get a transfer and I’m holding it next to the box and since I see it’s a token I know it’s the fare so he gets the transfer and I assume he’s gonna drop the token in the box. Well, not exactly. He starts fiddling around with it and tapping it at the coin slot as to say, telepathically to me while smiling at me with his missing front teeth, “hey bus driver, I got a token but I’m a make it seem like I dropped it in the box and just take the token and the transfer for free.”

Sorry toothless Tommy, it ain’t gonna fly.

So after 5 seconds of time-wasting I just tell him ‘drop in the box.’ So he drops it in the box and then starts Tryin to make convo like “orale” and “ya you from San Francisco” and I’m thinking to myself I got a conversationalist with me tonite..great. So I tell him “cmon keep it moving” and he goes and takes a seat near his friend. Good thing they were chatting each other up cuz I wouldn’t be able to deal with his bullshit.

I get to 16th and Potrero and pick up a wheelchair and about a dozen people and wheelchair dude tells me he wants to get off at Bacon. Sounds good and I get going.

Some old dudes start talking about how they are from San Francisco and how they used to live in the Haight and then they went to music and how they wrote some song that is hella famous and were trying to sing it but didn’t know the words. One of them had a goofy ass laugh that would change octaves also. So when I get near their stop the 1st moron decides to just walk all the way to the front and hold on to the handles on the front and the one on the door. I gave him a piece of my mind after that.
Me-“what do you think you’re doing? Theirs a reason to standing behind the line.”
Him-“oh I didn’t know. (and he moves up 1 step)”
I pull up to the stop(but still don’t open my doors) and let him have some more.
Me-“you aint paying attention and that’s how accidents occur. what if a car pulls out in front and i gotta jam on the brakes? you gonna get hurt and I’m a get in trouble because you aint thinking. that’s why you stay behind the line”

him-*blank look*

Then to top it all off his friend has to throw his 2 cents in by saying:” you’re getting a paycheck” as he gets off right after. What does your friends intelligence and reading level in regards to safety have to do with my paycheck?  still trying to figure that one out.

So I close my doors and im mumbling words under my breath and they are waving goodbye to me and i take off.

I get to Bacon and San Bruno and start getting ready to let the wheelchair dude off. I let the lift out and then nothing. It doesn’t want to go up and it doesn’t want to go down. GREAT. I keep hitting the button for like 2 minutes to see if anything will unstick but nothing so i call central. Now we have 2 buttons to call central: a regular call button and a priority button. I hit the priority button because, well… it was a priority since it never happened to me before.

They call me back like within the minute and here is how the convo went:

Me-“hows it going central. this is run 189 on the 9L. my wheelchair lift is stuck. doesn’t want to go in and out.”

CC-“run 189? you need to change the radio we have it saying 42. Location?ID?”

me-“on San Bruno at Bacon going outbound. ” I tell him my id number.

CC-“is the wheelchair passenger getting on or getting off?”

Me-“getting off.”

CC-“ok. we are going to send you some help. next time don’t use the priority.”

me-“copy that.”

So I tell the wheelchair passenger( who is like right next to me now) if he heard that. He said no. So I told him that central said this situation wasnt a priority and not to use that button for this. He looked at me an laughed and said “it is a priority to me!” and we laughed. Then he told me ” the fire engine will get me off the bus.” I didn’t know what he meant but I was soon to find out.

4 minutes later, a fire engine pulls up and 4 firefighters get out. I’m thinking to myself “there isn’t an injury or life threatening thing going on so where did they come from?” and the passenger gets up and hobbles down the steps. The 4 firefighters grab his scooter/wheelchair and pick it up out the bus. He gets back in his chair and gives me a wave and says good night and rolls off ha-ha

About 3 minutes later, an inspector pulls up and starts asking me questions. I told him that a fire engine came a took the passenger off the bus. He asks if I got the engine number and I told him no. I didn’t know i was supposed to get it. So he then starts pushing at the lift while I hit the button and nothing. So I let him get at the controls and I step aside and after 30 seconds it clicks loudly and moves in. You should have seen my face.  like really?!? the lift moves for him but not for me!? wow.

So he asks to see my paddle and radios in to central that we got it moved in and since the current time was the time I was supposed to pull in he just told me to go ahead and do that since their isn’t any point in waiting for the shop.

I change the head sign to ‘garage’ and head in.

Outbound 9. About 11:30AM.

Posted in 9 San Bruno on February 9, 2011 by 4x24

The 9 San Bruno is one of those lines that picks up a lot of people at all times of the day. I remember I was doing a schedule on the 9 and it was like 11:30 am and I had a standing load. I mean PACKED. Like where did everyone come from? Hahaha

But anyways, this happened as I was going outbound when I was first feeling out all the lines. I was coming down Market St and I was going to turn on 11th to get to the bus stop right at the corner. I’m already scanning the crowd to see who’s who. I see this one guy who usually gots a lot of cans he takes to the recycling center down near Oakdale. He was like 20 feet from the bus stop pole. As I slow into the bus stop I see these 2 white dudes look into the bags next to the pole and start kicking it and when I open the doors they just start to rush on without paying or saying anything. Now as I’m about to say something to them, the black guy jumps on the bus literally right behind them and grabs one of the dudes by the jacket and he pulls away so he comes up right behind him and they start roughing each other up right in the front( like where the elderly seats are). Glad no one was sitting there. So black dude got white dude in like a chokehold and he’s yelling in dudes face:

“What did my bags do to you? Tell me what they did to you!”

He kept repeating it like 2 more times.

So right when they first start tussling around I pop the brake and yell at them “take that shit off the bus or ima call the cops.” Like 30 seconds after black dude finished yelling at dude he let him go and walks back up to the front and pulls out his 2 dollars and tries to put it in the box and I tell him ” you and them cant ride. Yall gonna have to get off the bus.” The black guy looks at me at understands and he gets off. Now mind u, this dude never ever gave me any problems and he would make sure his bags of cans were out of the way when he got on. So it kind of sucked that he had to get off but if your gonna put hands on someone u gonna have to go. So I look back a see the 2 white dudes still on the bus; kinda at the single seats and I yell at them both of you gonna get off the bus. The one dude who caused all this looks back at me through the rear view mirror and says

“Who Me?”

I almost wanted to laugh at this idiot but I had to keep the straight face. He was like

“I didn’t do anything!”

I told him if u don’t get off the bus I’m calling the cops. His other friend didn’t do anything through this whole scene. He just stood their like a dumbass while his friend was getting choked out and while his friend was getting an earful from me.  So they get off the back off the bus and I start to take off and as I look in the rear mirror the idiot decides to kick my bus. Like really?! You still aint gonna get on the bus.

I just keep on rollin…
